An Interview With: Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry)

After Scar Symmetry blew us away with their London performance, we caught up with the newly crowned mastermind of the band guitarist Per Nilsson. There is much hype about the ‘Singularity‘ album trilogy, and with two albums to go we need something to get even more excited about…

Singularity: Phase I – Neohumanity‘ was released just over a year ago, and was met with an absolutely stunning reception. With Scar Symmetry falling relatively silent for a while on the plans for the next two albums of the trilogy, we had to ask what is in store for ‘Singularity: Phase II‘, and just when we are going to see it!

So is the sound of the new record going to be a follow-up from ‘Singularity – Phase I’ or is it going to be different?

It’s going to be pretty different in many ways from the first record. I mean it’s a trilogy, and my idea for the trilogy is that all 3 albums have their own identity. Releasing 5 albums in a row – they all just kind of happened. There was no plan for the music, maybe some for the lyrics, but for the ‘Singualrity’ we have a general idea of the whole trilogy with a synopsis and storyline that we’ve been working with. So I’m viewing this as a trilogy where each album will go in it’s own direction.

So the first album went pretty far into the progressive and the melodic. It was very much Lars’ album, it went a lot into the clean vocals and a lot of keyboards and progressive stuff. So the next album is gonna lean towards the other side of Scar Symmetry, the lyrics I have now and stuff are going into a darker place. It’s going to be more dark, heavy and brutal. Also for Scar Symmetry standards!

That sounds very promising!

It fits the lyrical direction, and it gives me a nice opportunity to really stretch out in that direction. If this were just a new album, not a trilogy, [with the difference] people would think ‘Oh, is this a new band?’ or something. But this is going to work!

So was this the plan from the beginning when you conceptualised the ‘Singualrity’ trilogy? Making the first record progressive, the second one the dark one, and the third one…well has that been thought of yet?

Yes. There is very much an idea in my head! But I knew of the whole idea in my head before I had written a single note for ‘Phase I’. I have an idea for ‘Phase 3’ but it’s too early to talk about it!
