An Interview With : Brujo (Brujeria)

Supergroups are all too often a mish mash of various different personalities coming together and aiming to overshadow the essential element of music, the song writing. Made up of Hongo (Shane Embury) El Cynico (Jeff Walker) and currently Andreas Bjornsson (At The Gates) Brujeria are without a doubt sounding tight. Bulldozing their way through the UK we were lucky enough to speak to the jefe himself Brujo about all things in the Brujeria world. Varying from how the band was created all those years ago to when we might be hearing this brand new album we aim to find out what exactly it is that gives these blokes a certain brujerizmo…

What have Brujeria been up to this year?

This year, just finishing the new record and trying to get it out before the end of the year. The problem is with touring and everybody else touring, it’s always been hard for us to get together for records and stuff so we should have it ready very soon.

So can you tell us about the writing process of the record?

Oh jeez! Let’s see… It goes back some years, you do some songs here, then you do some here, you do some vocals there. It’s just like all in pieces everywhere and now trying to piece it all together to make the record, it’s interesting usually we just go to the studio without writing anything before. Just hit record and write the songs and record them at the same time because we never have time to actually go back write the song, learn and practice it. We just have time to get everybody together and go but now we built it up over the years doing what we can, when we can. It’s easier to just go and do the whole thing right there and write everything right there. We tried it this way and it’s just taking years.

So it’s a different approach to the other albums?

It’s different with digital stuff we email each other the tracks, you get all of that, it’s supposed to be easier but it’s a lot harder haha!

Will it be tackling the same sort of themes that Brujeria have done in the past?

Yeah yeah, it’s like a continuation of the last one. It’s like a little story building up a lot of songs, we used to number them like part one and part two but there’s still going like a sequence of songs that will be on there we’ve got some drug themes. It has to have that being Mexican!
