Being one of the corner stones of Prog Spock’s Beard are in a word essential. Releasing their brand new album The Oblivion Particle we were able to catch up with the band on their London date of their current tour. With varying levels in it’s progressive nature the new album is a fantastic initiation for those less versed in the ways of Spock’s Beard. Speaking to Ted Leonard, Jimmy Keegan and Dave Meros listen to the unedited live interview below to find out a little more about the album’s themes, how they came about and what exactly the significance behind Bennet and his time machine is!
Could you tell us about the album’s name and it’s significance?
Dave : Well that was a result of not being able to use the name that we were riginally going to use. We thought of the name Kings of Oblivion and liked that, did a Google search and there was a pretty popular album in the seventies, kind of an underground group that released an album, Pink Fairies I think? I can’t remember so we can’t use that! But we liked the word Oblivion, so we came up with like fifty different ways to use that word and Oblivion Particle won and then it kind of accidentally worked it’s way into a couple of the songs, tying in with a couple of the songs as well, unplanned but a happy accident!
I was going to ask how does it tie in as a whole with the idea of the album itself and the album title?
Dave : There’s no real theme to the album.
Jimmy : It came after.
Dave : We kind of backed into a little bit of a theme, there’s some songs about invention or reinvention and discovery that kind of thing and Oblivion Particle, John wrote a story for the liner notes his story kind of implies that the Oblivion Particle was discovered and allowed the creation of the time machine in that other song “Bennett Built A Time Machine” and either one of those things may or may not have really been invented or discovered it could be just in this weird guy’s head.
Ted : It’s like the Spock’s Beard Flux Capacitor haha!
