An Interview With : Tobias Gustafsson (Cut Up)

Beginning the year anew we welcome Cut Up. Formed of the remains of Vomitory along with some incredibly talented new musicians the band are firmly rooted in the Old School Death Metal leanings of Metal. Being able to speak to drummer and all around lover of Death Metal Tobias Gustafsson we spoke with the sticksman about the new album. What the transition was like from previous bands to the writing of the new record Forensic Nightmares and why Bolt Thrower rule so hard!

What about the writing process for the new album, was that fairly fluid  and easy?

Yes, that too actually. When we started the band, the only song that we had to start with was ” Enter Hell”, which was untitled at that point. That was actually the last Vomitory song that I wrote, it was supposed to be used in Vomitory. We took that one to just play it and see how it felt. We gathered for the first time, the four of us also our vocalist / guitarist Andreas had an old song that he hadn’t used for anything. Which I had heard before, I had the demo version of that since a year back or something. I really liked it and we tried that one too and that one is the second song on the album, “Burial Time”. So those two songs were the first we started to feel the musical chemistry between the four of us. We felt that the style suited us and just to evaluate everything.

When we felt that this is it, everything went really fast from that. Andreas, he started to write, he got really really inspired and wrote a lot of songs. Everything was absolutely killer! I was amazed every time he sent us a new demo version that he had recorded on his computer . So yeah it went really smooth! I wrote another one also Anders, he wrote two songs. Erik wrote the lyrics for nine songs or something like that.

Oh wow, so quite a lot of them then!

Yeah, it feels great because all four members were involved a lot in the creative process and the writing process. Even though Andreas wrote most of the songs, we were all part of it when we were all gathered in the rehearsal room and tried the new songs out together, one by one. We did all the finishing touches of all the songs together.

Just out of curiosity who wrote “Brain Cell Holocaust”?

Oh that was Andreas,

That riff…

It’s your favourite song?

I think it is man, I just love that driving riff you know?

He wrote the lyrics too actually, its a favourite song of mine too. It’s so heavy and I feel like it’s like a steamroller haha!

As per usual this is just an excerpt of our interview with Tobias, listen to the full thing below along with many other interviews. Featuring, Symphony X, Carach Angren, Exodus and many more to come!

Cut Up’s debut album Forensic Nightmares is out now via Metal Blade.
