Releasing their brand new self titled record this year see’s Psycroptic advance even further in the ranks of Technical Death metal leaders. Lucky enough to catch Tazmanian torrent on their tour through the UK we sat down and spoke to one of the most important cogs in the Psycroptic machine, Dave Haley. Known far and wide for their musical prowess both brothers Dave and Joe are the musical masterminds behind the band. Combining air tight precision with boundless creativity we were able to speak to the drummer to see just what Psycroptic’s year has been like since their new album’s release.
What can you tell us about the new record?
Dave : Well I guess the specifics of it, took about eighteen months to write and record. We did a few shows during the whole process but usually when we’re in album mode we just kind of focus on that. Each album we do is very different in the way that we write and record it, for a number of reasons. I guess the main creative reason is that we don’t like to repeat ourselves we like to keep doing different stuff and I guess progress with some ideas that might have come up in previous albums, we like to explore them and another reason is logistically. We live in different places, so it’s always different in terms of getting together and jamming material each time is really different.
Dave : This time I guess Joe wrote the majority of it, like the songs were almost completed by the time that I got the material. We will always get together and structure it but he demo’d the songs almost fully. So then what we did is we went and demo’d it again, we were writing the parts at the time and then recording them so the demos were pretty much exactly the same as the album in the end. Which is something we hadn’t done before, I had always rehearsed my parts and then it would be a little bit different when we recorded it. This time we were actually using the demo’s as a reference, in the demo process we were trying a lot of different drum parts and seeing what worked and what didn’t work. We had never really done that before but yeah it was a cool process.
Dave : I guess the self titled aspect,
I was going to ask that later on haha!Dave : Yeah yeah haha! That came about like we were tossing up some titles but it was almost like, well this is the album that we have been trying to create for a while so we just called it a self titled album. Because I suppose we’ve gotta do one at some time in our career haha! Then also let’s use this as like a date stamp. Ok this is the best that we can do at the time kind of thing.
So it’s kind of like an identity sort of thing?Dave : Yeah, I think finally we have captured our own unique sort of sound. From here were inspired to progress again…
