AMON AMARTH – WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
This week we look to the Vikings for our Metal Masterpiece. Although not their biggest success commercially With Oden On Our Side is a stone cold classic. Any fan of the Swedish bearded behemoths will know it’s hallowed passages. Serving as a perfect introduction to Amon Amarth, it is exactly what the band embodies. From the melancholic “Cry Of The Black Birds” to the hundering introduction of “Valhall Awaits Me” Amon Amarth showcase their solid rhythmic stance. Whilst tumultuous “Asator” and “Runes To My Memory” fly by fast and focused, the ship burial tones of “Prediction Of Warfare” and “Under The Northern Star” trudge gracefully, ensuring that Amon Amarth’s melody shines through.
Amazing to think that this album is now nine years old. Similar to the melodic death metal sound, coupled with Johan Hegg‘s rasp and the idiosyncratic guitar harmonies makes this one of the bands strongest releases, amongst their highly praised catalogue. With Oden On Our Side represents Amon Amarth‘s evolution to the band they are today. A fan favourite that saw the band better themselves, particularly in the realms of production and songwriting. It’s clear to say that Oden is definitely on their side.
