Metal Moments: Equilibrium

In our first ‘Metal Moments’ segment, we ask Rene of Equilibrium to define the best of the bands songs to listen to in certain times of your average day.

We all have our ‘Metal Moments’. Songs that really suit particular instances of your day…waking up music, chilling music, angry music…as diverse as metal is, there’s always a song for that.

And who better to debut the segment with than bombastic songwriter Rene Berthiaume of Equilibrium, a band that have reached all sorts of hearts and minds with their latest epic ‘Armageddon‘. We ask him which songs of the band best suit particular times of the day…

So, in the Equilibrium discography…

What would be the best song to wake up to?

Mmm…I think maybe ‘Waldschrein’ you know? With the chickens in the beginning and that. I also had this in mind…when I write songs I always have moods, scenery and images. For this one, it was actually like you were living in a farm somewhere, or in the mountains, and the sun comes through the window and then you hear these chickens. So you wake up and think, alright let’s go to party!

What’s the best song to get you to work?

Maybe ‘Karawane’. It’s also from our album Erdentempel. It has a really ‘marching forward’ rhythm, and also the lyrics say that you should never give up, and you should always look forward…so I think this helps get through the day!

What’s the best song to drink a beer to?

Definitely ‘Wirtshaus Gaudi’. Years ago maybe it would have been ‘Met’ which is from our first album, but now this song catches the theme more!

What’s the best song to play a video game to?

From our new album we have a song called ‘Helden’, which is kind of an homage to video gaming, because we also have an 8-bit sound in the song. Some of the lyrics have references to games too like Wolfenstein, Far Cry, Super Mario…so this is definitely the song for that!

What’s the best song to take a summer holiday to?

Summer holiday….let’s see…I think this would also be from ‘Erdentempel’…’Heavy Chill!’ This song really has a holiday feeling in it…a sort of Carribean feel. I think the ‘Erdentempel album really is for a lot of things in life. I just realised!

What’s the best song for just chilling at home?

I think maybe ‘Mana’ from ‘Sagas’. It’s a really long song and you can lie down and let your thoughts and imagination flow out, so I think that’s it!

What song would you recommend for someone who has never heard Equilibrium before to get them in to the band?

That’s a hard one. We always try to make songs with different sounds…each is unique from each other…for example from our new album ‘Armageddon’, if you take ‘Born To Be Epic’, and then you take ‘Eternal Destination’, these are two songs that are completely different from each other. One is completely dark, and one has a fun vibe in it…sometimes we try to write songs that cover most aspects of Equilibrium but it’s difficult…

I think that ‘Waldschrein’ maybe would be the best. It’s got those folk elements, bombastic symphonic elements, German lyrics…maybe they should start with this, but there are plenty of songs to choose from!
