An Interview With: Garrett Whitlock (Tremonti)

Before Tremonti rocked London, we were able to catch the man behind the sticks Garrett Whitlock to ask a few questions about how Tremonti was developed as a metal band, given that it’s frontman has an extensive history of being involved in alternative rock.

Garrett has been with Tremonti with the start, understanding how the band has developed into one of the more unique outputs we saw in 2015’s ‘Cauterize‘, an alternative / thrash crossover that was at a stunning stage of refinement, and gained the applause of critics worldwide. It appears that there will be no slowing down after a brilliant album and an energetic worldwide tour, as the band plan straight into releasing an album in 2016 with more shows to follow. The story of Tremonti is simply an interesting one!

So the sound is quite different to what we’ve heard with Mark [Tremonti] before, you know Creed and Alter Bridge. How was that [heavy] sound created?

You know, Mark is a metalhead, I’m a metalhead, Eric’s a metalhead, that was kind of what we wanted to do was make heavier stuff than we had done in previous projects. Mark is constantly logging ideas in his laptop, he’d just kind of go through them, and we’d all be sitting there and he’d be playing ideas. It’s almost like anytime there was a real heavy, or chunky riff or something we were like ‘let’s start there!’.

So it was kind of preconceived going in?

It kind of evolved as it did, but the majority of the stuff we wanted to go for was the real riffy, heavy stuff. That’s the kind of stuff I gravitate towards.

Definitely with ‘Cauterize’ you definitely hear the thrash and the speed metal influences. Was it more experimental, or did you guys say ‘we’re gonna make a balls out thrashy record.’?

With the first record we all realised what we were capable of, kind of testing the waters. One of my favourite songs off the first record is ‘Wish You Well’, so when it came time to working on the second record we said ‘we need a few Wish You Well’s’ you know, just because it’s fun to play and we always close with that song, it’s always a crowd favourite. We definitely wanted to add more of that ‘go for the throat’, relentless, heavy stuff.
