A Riverside Story: How The Band Is Healing After Tragedy

In February last year, the ever popular Polish prog outfit were shocked with the sudden death of long-time guitarist Piotr Grudzinski. The tragedy ground band activities to a halt, with no future in sight. A year later, the band is finding it’s feet again by returning to the live stage. Before their London performance, we spoke to mainman Mariusz Duda on the return of Riverside to the live stage after coping with a difficult loss.

Strength can be manifested in many different forms. From the most literal take on the subject of the physical act of lifting  to something far re demanding, emotional strength. Resolving to carry on despite the passing of their friend and band member Piotr, Riverside rally together their collective musical strength to bring to the world their final release as a four piece. Presenting to us Eye Of The Soundscape it’s clear that Riverside will never truly be the same band again as we move into a new chapter in the band’s life cycle.

One of the mainstays of the Progressive genre has always been the classic calling card of the concept album. Having seen a slight resurgence in its popularity over recent years it has become a more accepted form of storytelling. Releasing their brand new album Love, Fear and The Time Machine, Riverside construct a hazy retrospective of a persons life and their decisions to change it. Last month we caught the band on their London date, prior to the performance we were able to speak with mastermind Mariusz Duda about the new album, it’s writing process and why I should be afraid of a hat?

It would seem that Prog truly does live in the heart of North London. With the holy trinity of venues being homes away from home for bands the world over. From the Islington 02 Academy, Union Chapel and now the Islington Assembly Halls. A quaint venue which has been the home to some of the more regal of Progressive leanings. Tonight we welcome back one of the genre’s most nostalgic of bands, Riverside.
