EP Review : Lamb of God – The Duke

Mortality, a subject explored limitlessly in culture. Moving as far back as the beginning of man, the idea of our own mortality has been questioned in a universal language. Independent of borders the idea is a unifiying principle among man. Known for its unforgiving nature cancer is a remorseless illness. Befriending one fan after his incarceration in Prague, Randy Blythe, was contacting by one Wayne. Battling the all too familiar battle with cancer for a short period the two became friends until sadly there came news of Wayne’s passing. Among the many conversations had whilst recording their follow up VII : Sturm Und Drang one would be regarding potential singing on the record. Returning with their ferocious comeback Lamb of God astounded the world once more. Wanting to create more than just an extra track “The Duke” was born, a record that surpasses a simple dedication.

Opening with a solemn sounding clean intro before unleashing the bands trademark crunch turns the song instantly on its head. Featuring predominantly clean vocals “The Duke” will no doubt obtain some backlash amongst the less open minded of fans. Born from a conversation with Wayne’s father, the man revealed his son was named after the classic western actor, John Wayne. Following suit “Culling” the bands second new song is in keeping with the band’s patented approach that might saite an old school fans appetite more. Tickling the classic sweet spots with a quick fire solo section that sees Morton once again dance his way stylistically over the blues scale.

Tailing off with the addition of live performances of “Still Echoes” at Germany’s Rock AM arena, which suitably conveys the band’s unmatched live prowess along with the Bonnaroo duo of “512” and “Engage The Fear Machine“. It’s a deadly combo but The Duke is as much about the music as it is about the message. Not needing to raise awareness about the harsh reality of cancer, that now according to statistics one in two of us will face, the band instead shed light on the donations of bone marrow that are in dire need and sadly in shortage. With a track record the likes of Lamb of God we all knew what we would be getting. Premium cuts of Metal, tying fans over until the eventual announcement of new material the EP aims not only to pay homage to a man but his and everyone’s unifying struggle in their battle against their own mortality.
