Trying something new is a commendable act, it often takes guts a bit of risk and confidence. Seeing bands grow is one of the most important things, in their career so upon hearing that Morbid Angel were releasing new material after such a long abscence everyone waited with baited breath for a magnificent record, what they got was Illud Divinum Insanus Like I said before its great that bands experiment it’s a big leap that sometimes pays off and sometimes, well case in point Illud was a mish mash of ideas from the death metal guardians combining ambitious concepts and new elements Morbid Angel hadn’t tried before and falling flat on its face. It was almost unanimously panned by critics and left fans wondering how the same band that out out Altars of Madness and Blessed Are The Sick to then produce a form of bastard Ministry meets Marilyn Manson effort, the genre gap was too big. After hyping up the album people then saw that the songs weren’t coherent, there was no flow to the album and it sounded like a Static X tribute band. As well as having awful production leading the drums to be essentially sounding like a machine when the Morbid Angel we all know and love have such earthy organic sounds of their instruments. Illud Divinum Insanus was a gamble, sometimes they pay off albeit slightly alienate fans, for example Opeths Heritage other times they have grandiose ideas that just fall short that people try and forget about, this album alas was the latter.
