Prior to the thrash veterans marking their UK return we see the arrival of a spritely Bliksem. Putting heart and soul into the performance the crowd are slowly won over with tracks like “Fucked Up Avenue” though personally their sound to me remains a little too convoluted, perhaps not entirely sure what genre the band are aiming to bring to the fore. Nevertheless it is undeniable that the band play well together and bring a sense of maturity to the set.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, with Flotsam And Jetsam I beg to differ. Having rerecorded the fan favourite No Place For Disgrace, the band have embarked on a club tour, forming much of the bands set list for this evening we kick off the performance with title track “No Place For Disgrace” meeting every fans expectations as what was a calmly waiting crowd erupts into a thrashing frenzy. Followed swiftly by the fan favourite “Desecrator” and “She Took An Axe”, its clear that tonight Flotsam And Jetsam are here for their fans, irregardless of what age we might be in, the band knows what the fans truly love  Bringing us back to the days of old with the first track that started it all “Hammerhead” going down an absolute storm, the band are seen to have some technical difficulties when performing “Iron Tears“. It transpires that guitarist Michael Gilbert had blown the amplifier such was the shredding prowess. After the momentary stage lapse is finished were pulled straight back into the thick of it as Eric AK announces that having not played this song live in a long while the band rip into “Swatting At Flies” from the Cuatro album seemingly going down an absolute treat.

Picking songs that span throughout the bands very long career , thirty four years to be exact. The band are not exactly spring chickens yet the performance this evening is handed out as though the band were newly formed. Given the help of new sticks man and former Shadows Fall drummer the classic tracks are played with a new found sense of purpose, it will be interesting to see what the bands new album will be delivering. Eric AK’s spot on vocal performances which many young singers would have trouble to keep up with in this day and age. Introducing next song with the heroic build up of “Escape From Within” though lending itself to the 1988 classic version of No Place For Disgrace minus the police sirens of course! Moving into a song a bout a certain dictator the band move into the final blows of the night with “Der Fuhrer”, “Hard On You” delivering the devastating effect that this thrash band endure. Finishing off with our final Samurai cut “PAAB” we see the evening draw to a close.

The performance this evening was fantastic, though make no mistake this was a concert for the fans. With the decidedly emptier than usual Underworld beginning to take their leave. Regardless of the number of people attending if Flotsam And Jetsam keep performing with this level of passion behind their music, it could be one or one thousand, the effect would remain just the same. Not revolutionary but a fantastic night of old school classic thrash cuts.

Flotsam And Jetsam are hard at work on their new album!
