With the absolutely fantastic news that SikTh have indeed decided to return to the scene. After a select appearance at last years Download festival followed by small appearances touring the band announced last Monday that they will be performing at select dates in the UK one of which being London’s Forum! Fantastic news for the Brighton band. Not only this however the band have also announced that they will be releasing a brand new EP! So in celebration of this week’s fantastic news we thought that it would be apt to revisit one modern metals most forward thinking releases, Death Of A Dead Day.
SIKTH – DEATH OF A DEAD DAY
Long before the emergence of the Periphery’s and the Animals As Leaders of the world there stood tall the young band from Brighton. Writing one of the most visionary records in modern metal, Death Of A Dead Day was born. Combining techniques that are now commonplace in progressive metal, the band incorporated out of kilter time signatures, spider like riffing, legato leaps and the combination of two vocalists contrasting each other beautifully to create a cartoony sense of theatre within the band.
Consisting of single “Summer Rain” where the band began the seasoned slapping of guitars along with the acrobatic verse riffs, the completely off the wall interlude of “Mermaid Slur” that would give Andy Serkis a run for his money. Followed the by the fading “When The Moments Gone” though my personal favourite goes to “As The Earth Spins Around” the truly jarring sense of rhythm perfectly encapsulated the entire SikTh ethos that the band left behind leaving fans beginning for the day that has now finally arrived since they announced their split. The now nine year old album still sounds like one of the most visionary interpretations of metal music. Up there with the likes of Meshuggah for me personally, the band retain the gritty sense of urbanisation that was occurring at the records release to paint the simultaneous colourful yet bleak perspective that is truly unique. The unpredictable critical mass that not even Bruce Banner would be able to contain are pioneers in their own right.
One of the best records of modern day and damn right is it a Metal Masterpiece!
