August Burns Red. Pioneers of the late metalcore movement in my eyes, having been one of my all time favourite bands, I cannot help but feel that they are being slightly stagnant. Announcing that they would be releasing a brand new album this year, entitled Found In Far Away Places, the band were teasing a reveal. Last night we saw that the band have indeed launched preorders for the new album along with a brand new song, “The Wake”. Now for those of you who know August Burns Red, the band exploded with Messengers, then beginning to hone their sound tapped into 2009’s Constellations. From then on the band have reached a plateau of sorts. Switching things up slightly with Leveler including acoustic flamenco style guitars a la Between The Buried and Me, but then with the arrival of Rescue and Restore the band have very much been treading the same ground.
New song “The Wake” is probably the heaviest the band have sounded in while, wanting to kick start the album with a big bang the band went for all out assault. The track is undeniably heavy, with the trickster like breakdowns that the band have always employed coming through, it just feels safe. Sure the band can put out similar material and fans alike will lap it up but I just hope that there might be more experimentation. A band that wasn’t afraid to push the envelope when it came to their sound, now they sound as though they will settle… This does not mean that the song is bad however, by no means. It’s heavy, fast paced ripper of a song, just my wishful thinking!
What do you guys think, am I being too harsh, remember that this is only the first example of what we are yet to hear from the bands new album! I’m keeping an open mind.
