Recently Muse have been teasing by way of Instagram details surrounding their forth coming release. The follow up to 2012’s The 2nd Law finally has both a release date and a title. Drones is set for a June 8th release date in perfect time for their headline slot at Download Festival among others. With 2nd Law dividing opinion, bringing the band’s various influences to the fore. Single “Unsustainable” was a straight up Drum and Bass affair, alienating some of the more rock oriented fans so it will be interesting to see what kind of direction the band decide to go for their new album.
From the album artwork it looks that we’re back to familiar Muse territory of totalitarian states imposing their space laden rules in the universe. The band will be releasing the first single from the album entitled “Psycho” at 6:00pm GST today (12/03/2015). Hopefully one of rock’s most important trio’s will throw down the gauntlet with the new album, after the slightly lack luster 2nd Law and even The Resistance…
Matt Bellamy states :
“To me, ‘Drones’ are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behaviour with no recourse. The world is run by Drones utilizing Drones to turn us all into Drones. This album explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors”
Well that sounds like familiar territory… Although I have to agree with Bellamy his point doesn’t fall on deaf ears. Particularly in this day and age where people seem to be enslaved by Facebook and Twitter, organising a night out to then spend it all on their individual phones… It’s reassuring that this is Muse as we know them, perhaps we might not get a return to Origin Of Symmetry but we can always hope.
