Following on from debuting the first taste of Juggernaut, with the first song “The Scourge” showcasing what to expect from Juggernaut : Alpha and giving us a taste of the heavier spectrum with “The Bad Thing” on Juggernaut : Omega we’re back to Alpha for their latest song “22 Faces“. Very much the Periphery we have come to know, “22 Faces” is much in the vein of the cult self titled debut. For good reason, not that I didn’t like II, I just thought that it lacked the punches that their self titled effort pulled off so effortlessly.
With seven string breakdowns being more than present in the song, its probably one of the heaviest examples we’ve heard so far. Strong melodies from Sotello are thrown around in the chorus whilst a guitar lead shadows the vocals, but the real highlight is the bridge that moves into the slick solo midway through the song. Really throwing back to what made this band unique from the very beginning, which feel was slightly lost on their previous albums. Throughout the song is ever changing described by Sotello as “very schizophrenic“, its a perfect example of just exactly how influential Periphery‘s grasp on the modern metal scene really is.
If this is any indication of what Periphery will be sounding like then they shall rightfully be sat back atop their modern progressive metal throne. Interesting, unpredictable and rightfully Periphery.
Check out “22 Faces” and make sure you pick up Juggernaut when its released January 26th via Sumerian Records.
