A band that have never really been in the spotlight, probably to do with their album schizophrenic like sound, The Red Chord are the masters of brutality. Melding a mix of almost hardcore riffing with grindcore esque pinch harmonics the best example of these metal fiends at work is their criminally overlooked Clients. Creating an experimental mix between some of the heaviest material there is in metal and adding in jazz flourishes and that typically tongue in cheek style in the lyrics. With the thematic subject of the album being about Kozowyk’s past experiences with mentally disabled students that one of his family members drove around. The songs in themselves are warped accounts of the experiences Kozowyk had, with each song being a different “Client” describing a specific mental ailment. Often nonsensical lyrics actually pertain to real life experiences.
Clients, although not easily accessible once you get past the frenecity of all the instruments seemingly playing different things all at the same time its an absolute schooling in extreme music title track “Clients” for example is a one minute assault on the senses. Not only creating head scratching riffs but making them memorable and in the case of the classic slam anthem “Antman” groovy as all hell. Almost 10 years since the recording was released it still sounds current, you could argue that even if The Red Chord are off the wall, there’s no denying that they were way ahead of their time. Many bands try and recreate the sheer energy that is felt within this unpredictable mass of energy that The Red Chord seem to be able to harness and unleash at any point. “Love On The Concrete” a perfect example of that infectious groove they have that makes them one of the quintessential bands of the 2000’s. Whilst not forgetting the beginning of their more progressive facet in the brilliantly titled “He Was Dead When I Got There” the seven minute final track.
Surely not all people will agree with me putting this a Metal Masterpiece but the way that the boys execute the riffs, blasts, seemingly random clean guitar lines is almost with the precision of an (ant). Not only being a forward thinking band but being one of the most inventive bands of the past decade, if you’re a fan of grindcore, hardcore and of course death metal and you’ve not heard Clients make sure you blast some of it today.
