Album Review : Incite – Oppression

Roots, discerning heritage both metaphorical and factual, fronted by Richie Cavalera being the relation of the Sepultura frontman of course there is going to be slight influence but has the man followed in his footsteps or begun to forge his own path altogether.

Returning after their previous effort Incite are welcomed back into the Metal arena. Quite rightly titled Oppression very much keeps the listener down to the ground. Enlisting producer Steve Evetts on the record the band have grown with their sophomore release. Title track “Oppression” encompasses the band’s stomping groove, whilst giving subtle nods to Metalcore injecting small amounts of melody into the heavily down tuned guitars. An ever changing entity the record doesn’t quite sit still throughout its listen, the deceptively titled “Stagnant” is anything but from its maelstrom riffing right up until it’s end.

Perhaps my only bone to pick with the album truthfully would be the vocals. Neither a plus or a minus they sit well within the mix but are somewhat a little generic. That being said the power that Richie Cavalera hurls out his screams is felt reverberate through the record, nevertheless this is the band’s second major full length release. Which shows even more growth than the work on previous record All Out War. Working with producer Evetts the band got the absolute best out of themselves. Songs like airtight “Forced Into Life” remain within the three minute mark with thought punches their than mindless bludgeoning. Single “No Remorse” features well written, easy to follow vocals along with some brilliant guitar work from both Kevin McAllister and Dru Rome.

As the cold opening of “I Want It All” states with “Heavy fucking Metal!” this is exactly what Oppression embodies. Bringing to mind the sound we were accustomed to hearing in the nineties with a modern spin Incite have delivered an album that is as much a slight nostalgia induced step back in time as it is a step forward.

[why]Fans of unadulterated straight forward Groove Metal will no doubt get a kick out of the latest incarnation of Incite’s creativity in Oppression. If they keep material up like this theyre onto a winner.[/why]
