Well, how do we even begin to talk about what was probably one strangest, most difficult years in the festivals history? Wacken Open Air 2023 was met with rain on biblical proportions, throwing the entire festival in jeopardy as eager metalheads from around the world had to wait in shelters and see if the event would even take place.
We, at The Metalist, were part of the unfortunate group that got stranded on route to the festival. The weather did not smile down, and for the first time in ten years, we were unable to attend ourselves because of the weather situation.
However, in the face of adversity, the promoters were determined to make our beloved Wacken Open Air happen. Combined with their hard work and the sacrifice of some die hard metal fans, the festival took place in a slightly scaled down capacity. This year, we had to live vicariously through our friends that managed to attend the festival, who compiled the review on our behalf (big shoutout to Thomas, Katrin, and Julia for the help!!).
So, without further ado, here is our vicarious review of the rainiest WOA ever.
Intro
Wacken Open Air, the annual pilgrimage for metal enthusiasts, once again transformed the small village of Wacken, Germany into the epicenter of heavy metal in August 2023. The festival, held from August 2 to August 5, maintained its reputation as the world’s premier metal festival with a stellar lineup, unmatched atmosphere, but facing extreme difficulties because of the heavy rains that lashed on the festival. However, Wacken Open Air 2023 encapsulated the spirit of metal and community, proving why it continues to be a landmark event in the music world.

Their set was a relentless onslaught of heavy metal classics, including “Can I Play With Madness?,” “Fear of the Dark,” and “The Trooper,” executed with the ferocity that has defined their career.
Another headliner, Megadeth, brought their iconic style to Wacken. Dave Mustaine’s vocal prowess and the band’s tight musicianship with legend Marty Friedman were on full display as they powered through anthems like “Tornado of Souls,” “Symphony of Destruction,” and “Peace Sells.” The crowd’s energy was palpable, and the sing-alongs to their timeless hits were a testament to the band’s enduring influence.
Among the newer acts, Jinjer stood out with their progressive metalcore sound. Their set was a showcase of technical proficiency and dynamic performance, highlighted by Tatiana Shmailyuk’s versatile vocals. The organization of Wacken Open Air 2023 was impeccable, reflecting years of experience and meticulous planning. The festival grounds were well-laid-out, with clear signage and thoughtfully designed areas for each stage, vendor, and service point. Despite the lower number of attendees and extreme mud, moving between stages and facilities was relatively hassle-free, thanks to the efficient layout.
The facilities, including food and beverage vendors, were plentiful and diverse. From traditional German fare to international cuisine, the food options catered to all tastes and dietary needs. The inclusion of vegetarian and vegan choices was appreciated, ensuring that everyone could find something to enjoy.

The sound quality at Wacken Open Air 2023 was superb, with each stage equipped with top-tier sound systems that delivered powerful and clear audio. Whether experiencing the thunderous lows of a death metal band or the intricate highs of a power metal solo, the sound was consistently excellent.
The production values were equally impressive, with elaborate light shows, pyrotechnics, and stage designs enhancing the visual impact of the performances. Bands like Kreator took full advantage of these elements, incorporating crystal clear thrash sounds and dramatic visuals into their set, creating an immersive experience for the audience.

Wacken Open Air has always been about more than just music, and 2023 offered a rich array of activities that reinforced the sense of community. The Metal Market, a staple of the festival, was a bustling hub where fans could purchase band merchandise, vinyl records, and unique handmade items. The diversity of vendors ensured that there was something for everyone, from rare collectibles to quirky souvenirs.
The Wacken Foundation Camp played a crucial role in supporting new talent and promoting metal culture. Workshops, panel discussions, and meet-and-greet sessions with artists provided fans with unique opportunities to engage with the metal community on a deeper level. These interactions fostered a sense of connection and learning, enhancing the overall festival experience.
Additionally, the festival featured a variety of non-musical activities, including metal yoga sessions and medieval-themed reenactments. These activities offered a welcome break from the intensity of the performances and allowed attendees to unwind and engage in different aspects of metal culture.
Challenges and Improvements
While Wacken Open Air 2023 was a great experience, there were undoubtedly a few challenges. Many fans were unable to attend because of the weather situation, leaving a few frustrated without clear communication about admission to the festival. However, it was an unprecedented situation, where the promoters and staff did everything they could, offering incentives to next years festival for those that weren’t able to attend.
Despite these challenges, the organizers did an admirable job of mitigating issues. Additional shelter areas and water stations were set up to help attendees cope with the weather. The emphasis on safety and comfort was evident, ensuring that the festival remained enjoyable even under less-than-ideal conditions.
