Esteemed ethnographer and adventurer, Thor Heyerdahl would have been would have been 100 years old today, had he not died tragically at the age of 87 from a brain tumour. He specified in cultural studies and one particular exhibition being where both himself and his crew sailed a balsa wood raft over 5,000 miles across from Peru to French Polynesia to prove that his thoughts that the islands were in fact colonized from the America’s rather than the Asian mainland. Whilst not only proving his theory to be correct the point of the journey was to essentially re trace the journey using materials that would have been available at the time in 1492. The journey was successful on the Kon-Tiki when it arrived 101 days after it had first set sail. This was just one of his many esteemed projects and you can feel free to find out more here.
So in celebration of Thor Heyerdahl’s inquisitive mind as an anthropologist let us throw our horns up to some Norwegian Metal and let him know that his studies were not in vain! And well, seeing as he was an explorer why not follow Immortal into “Antarctica” complete with cheesy video!
Happy birthday Mr Heyerdahl!
