NEVERMORE – THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR
Before dispersing Nevermore were one of the best acts going, despite being the hermits of the metal world. Rarely touring, when the band was assembled it was a sight to behold. Now segregated, with Chris Broderick having left for Megadeth, Warrel Dane eventually rebirthing Sanctuary and Loomis creating solo albums, Conquering Dystopia and joining the ranks of Arch Enemy. Ten years prior to this This Godless Endeavor was born.
Epitomising the Nevermore sound, long before the likes of Periphery had surfaced Loomis had claimed the seven string for his own. Now a stale asnd predictable instrument , versatile were its uses. Similar to their thrash brethren what set them apart was the inspired use of the extra string .Giving songs weight, from the frenetic riffing of thrashing classics like “Born (The Retribution Of Spiritual Sickness) ” or the slower lament of “Sentient 6“. Always reminiscent of the opening mission in Devil May Cry for those who played it…
Though it was not all about the guitar, Warrel Dane‘s operatic wailings, characteristic of Nevermore had never sounded so good. Our musical compare although majestic, retained the air of despondency. For those searching for technical ability This Godless Endeavor featured some of Nevermore‘s best musicianship. From shred tastic “Psalm Of Lydia” to the prodigious title track.
The splendour of This Godless Endeavor ripples throughout the many demanding listens. From immediate favourites to the more obscure pleasures, this was arguably Nevermore in its prime. A fitting epitaph.
