Pegged as one of the year’s most exciting releases, Native Construct are a little known affair and probably for good reason as it’s members are still in school! Consisting of principal composer and guitarist Myles Yang along with bassist Max Harchik and singer Robert Edens. Native Construct are the most intriguing three piece you will have heard in a long time. When Metal Blade CEO Brian Slagel, caught wind of the band they we’re signed to Metal Blade records, making them unique in that they haven’t even finished university!
Finding time to attend classes at the esteemed Berklee College Of Music, the trio painstakingly created the various compositions that make up the debut album throughout 2011 to 2013. Being largely self produced the album is the definition of DIY. Having recorded all elements of the band bar vocals in their home studio in Boston, the band we’re slowly crafting together somethign truly unique. Recording vocals along with mixing and mastering duties with the legendary prog mind that is Jamie King (Between The Buried and Me, The Contortionist) the band were beginning to take shape, resulting in their debut album Quiet World.
If that’s not enough to entice you, the lyrical concept behind the album will definitely. In the words of the band :
“Quiet World is about a guy who loves a girl. The guy is a bit of an odd and eccentric person – an outcast. He’s also a mute, and a little unstable, as it turns out. The girl doesn’t return his feelings, but he can’t bring himself to let go. As his unrequited passion for her devolves into obsession and eventual resentment, his mind begins to slip further and further away. He convinces himself that he can’t be loved because of his condition and abnormalities. So he decides to create for himself a new, fantastic world of which he has complete control – a world where there are no oddballs or outcasts. A world where everyone is surrounded by people who are just like themselves: a much quieter world.“
An almost modern day telling of Helen Keller, just with a lot more prog. Though personally I found the band slightly harder to latch onto at first, once you’re drawn in there’s no going back. Melding sound scapes from the classic Meshuggah eight string attack to the serene melodies enhanced of course by Edens‘ vocals. This truly is ambitious stuff, personally I’ve not quite heard anything like it. Now the band have released a playthrough showcasing their talent on guitar and bass. Not exactly a normal length for a single, eight minutes, but this is not quite conventional band. Check out the excellent “The Spark Of Archon” below!
Listen with an open mind and if you like what you hear you can also listen to the band’s first single “Mute“.
