Once More ‘Round The Sun is not only a fantastic album that us here at The Metalist adore but it seems that they have won over a new fan of a more celebrity status. Performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live for the first time this Monday, Mastodon delighted the crowds to “The Motherload” on the outdoors AT&T stage. Not only is this pretty spectacular for the band, but I believe that its fantastic for Metal itself. There’s always going to be metal heads that disagree with a bands new sound, that they’ve sold out and that they don’t sound the same but it seems that Mastodon have found the perfect match of accessibility with their inimitable progressive stretch. For them to be playing Jimmy Kimmel Live, I personally think is a huge step for Metal itself, showing the world that not all metal heads are bearded people who listen to music where you can’t understand the lyrics but that there is a heck of a lot more to the music than people previously knew.
With charts becoming increasingly more accepting, for example love them or hate them Avenged Sevenfold cracked the Number One spot in the charts, which is no mean feat. So perhaps this is a beginning of a new age where bands might actually get the exposure they deserve. Of all bands Mastodon have consistently been pushing both the boundaries of their sound and their song writing skills, metal heads the world over were aware of Mastodon’s huge release but more mainstream members of the public were not and I think its about high time that they were. Hopefully this kind of trend will keep going and we might see a transformation, ensuring that as always Metal will be not necessarily to everyone’s taste but slowly getting more accepted within a normal environment.
Plus what is cooler than seeing Jimmy Kimmel hold up a copy of OMRTS with a legion of fans behind him.
There’s hope for metal yet!
