The day after thanksgiving is always known as Black Friday. After everyone has had all their much deserved turkey and a nice rest the day afterwards is all about the sales. With some truly crazy occurences happening here in ol Blighty over the past couple of years, I’m sure that our neighbours over the pond will be experiencing something rather similar. Last year one hundred and forty four million US citizens went out shopping on Black Friday so it’s a pretty big day, although not strictly treated as a holiday it is synonymous with the arrival of the festive season. There are some, however who would prefer to just relax and be at peace. So what would be more peaceful than five metal themed Black Friday songs! Even if you are a shopper heading out on this most riotous of days this could be your shopping soundtrack!
Megadeth – “Good Mourning (Black Friday)”
Seeing as it is the actual day of Black Friday why not let Mr Mustaine kick things off with the fantastic thrashfest that is “Good Mourning (Black Friday)“. The song itself is to do with some form of brutal killings that would occur as a rite to prove themselves to the dark lord. Either way its an awesome song, definitely contender for one of the best on Peace Sells… bar the infamous title track. Complete with some killer solo’s and is the perfect way to kick our little list off. Especially pertinent seeing as this week we saw the announcement that both Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick decided to leave Megadeth!
Decapitated – “Flash B(l)ack”
When the absolutely ravenous Organic Hallucinosis was released back in 2006 it was a ground breaking piece in the death metal industry. Although it contained only seven tracks its some of the most fierce work the band has created to date. “Flash B(l)ack” one of the many highlights in the album is an aural assault on the senses. Slightly slower than its counter parts but none the less devastating, a great song to play any day but specifically today!
Meshuggah – “Pitch Black”
Easily looked over the small EP the band released last year through Scion AV contains a fantastic nugget of a song. In keeping with the classic Meshuggah style of very minimalist instrumentation. Creating simple yet incredibly complex riffing structures along with slightly out of time drumming of Thomas Haake given the song a drunken waltz. Moving closer to the final crescendo where all instruments come together to create the zenith of chaos, also a small window into the ideas of what might be incorporated in their next release soon!
Scale The Summit – “Black Hills”
The instrumental quartet have been seeing a slow but steady growth over the years. Having played their first ever UK show around this time last year at The Underworld (of which yours truly attended) its high time that these boys got some recognition. Hailing from Berkeley the four lads are absolute virtuoso’s. Front runner Chris Letchford can be seen here exhibiting all the fretboard acrobatics that make up most of Scale The Summit‘s song writing. Although they maybe very technical the true genius lies in their ability to create a story telling ark in music, giving many different layers to the songs. Be it the relaxing melodies or the techinical riffing. They’re a fantastic band that everyone should know about.
Watain – “Black Flames March”
A band that need no introduction, experts in anything that is vaguely a darker shade of grey. Watain are kings in the Black metal arena, they may not be in the vein of Mayhem or the classic Darkthrone but their new brand riff heavy black metal, searing leads and now experimentation, demonstrated on last years excellent The Wild Hunt. Creating a sound that would summon Beelzebub himself to discuss the affairs down below with Erik Danielsson the band command any black metal fan ensuring that they will forever be remembered. Not to mention their live shows are a matter of public safety…
Whatever you do, wherever you are make sure that you keep your Black Friday metal with The Metalist’s Black Friday playlist!
