It’s been a fantastic year for Behemoth, with frontman Nergal beating leukaemia and the band releasing an album to the highest acclaim. MetalBlast caught up with the band to revel in their current wave of success, but Nergal had some interesting things to say…
After releasing what is arguably Behemoth’s most successful album ‘The Satanist‘ in February, Metal Blast asked what was next on the agenda for the Polish titans:
“This album opened many doors for us, but it also closed many. You can expect anything from us. Things could go in any direction. There might not even be another record; everything feels right.”
“We’re on a very exciting journey right now. It’s a very joyful ride – but I don’t know where it’s going to take us. We might end in a dead-end, and just call it quits.”
Generally when a band is riding such success they don’t just pack it up and call it a day, but then again Behemoth aren’t your average band. Nergal has built a reputation of being honest, and a diverse artist which he elaborates in why Behemoth could potentially call it quits:
“I have so many ideas about so many different things, I want to write another book, play more music that isn’t necessarily metal. There are many bands that just put out records to have a reason to tour, but you won’t see us doing that. I’ve always been honest.”
It seems Nergal is more interested in leaving a legacy rather than pushing the success more and more to a point of becoming irrelevant. Our take on this is that while at this point Behemoth are on a high, it’s pretty unlikely that they will officially call it quits being an integral part of the Polish metal scene. It is likely however that it will be a while before we see a new Behemoth album or any touring after the cycle for ‘The Satanist‘ is complete. It’s will be a very hard album to follow up and Nergal is probably going to focus his creative energies elsewhere for a while until inspiration strikes, exactly as it did for the Satanist. Don’t fret, we don’t think the end is coming for Behemoth!
