Their influence in the death metal scene can be felt through almost all Melodic Death Metal bands of current. The perfect use of harmony and heaviness is masterful and the album that kicked it all off was Heartwork.
From the haunting opening lead lines in “Buried Dreams” to the frenetic climax of “Death Certificate” were treated to grade a melodic death metal, with Jeff Walker’s signature snarl as the lyrics are spat at you heightened only by Amotts essential lead lines. Many see Heartwork as the first evidence of Melodic Death Metal’s fruition, sure the Swedes may know a thing or two but team one of them up with these Liverpudlians and this album is untouchable.
The groove of “No Love Lost” is second to none and “This Mortal Coil” has now become an anthem for the death metal legions. It seems to be the case that Carcass were visionaries in their time, writing an album in 1993 that would be so timeless that even 21 years later it still sounds fresh. Although Carcass began as a grindcore outfit they soon realised that they were onto something and began to move from the grind roots to a more, in hindsight, familiar territory. After releasing “Swansong” they began to decline, although it seems that most metalheads forgave them. Mainly because they had the fantastic rebirth last year with the release of “Surgical Steel” what most call Heartwork 2.0! So do yourself a favour and crank this gem before you head out at the weekend, especially if you shall be seeing them at Sonisphere!
