New York hardcore outfit Biohazard recently interviewed with Met Al Metal about the band’s porn connection almost completely overshadowed the band’s music and culture.
Former vocalist Evan Seinfeld was an actor in the porn industry, and when he married pornographic actress Tera Patrick a lot of media started to make direct connections with porn and Biohazard – something the band was not thrilled about. In the interview drummer Danny Schuler spoke about the media connections and the audience response:
“I never saw a connection between what we were trying to say and pornography. I never wanted that connection; I never saw that connection.
“Sex is such a powerful thing – if you involved sex in anything you’re doing, the sex will always overwhelm anything you’re trying to say.”
“To me, Biohazard has always been about rising above the shit in life that fucks you up. We’ve always had the band to express things that bothered us. I don’t see the tie-in with pornography. I never wanted it there and I’m glad it’s gone.”
“I know it’s funny; I know it’s greta to joke about it. But when my kids go online and they search ‘Biohazard’ and porno comes up instead of music – that sucks. We’re trying to do positive things. Good things.”
The band could have exploited this opportunity to gain leverage on the mainstream scale, but they didn’t. Something that should be respected as it’s all too easy to take advantage of cheap publicity. Vocalist Evan Seinfeld quit abruptly in 2011, and the band has since not been hawked about their porn connections.
