Ah Sunday! The day before the dreaded return to work on Monday. The day where you try and savour the most time away from whatever desk metaphorical or otherwise. Traditionally seen as a day to relax and just chill, we see this Sunday be one of discovery. From time to time we will be showcasing one album that would be perfect for that Sunday morning after if you’ve had one too many and then some more after that, or simply if you just wanted a little break. Kicking off the Lazy Sunday is Porcupine Tree‘s In Absentia.
It seems as though when principal member Steven Wilson is writing any form of music, he channels the inner being of a Sunday. Able to create a relaxed, yet slightly melancholic atmosphere, Porcupine Tree are experts when it comes to the dreary progression. In Absentia being one of their prime cuts, is full of relaxing songs. Although opener “Blackest Eyes” will certainly shake off the cobwebs of Saturday evening, we’re then gently shown the more melodic side of things in “Trains” and “Heart Attack In A Layby” throughout the album. Aiming to savour the most out of this day listen to the album with an open ear. Perhaps it might be a strange departure from the metal musings of normal, In Absentia still retains a certain element that is present within the music we all love. A good start or finish to your Sunday.
