Absence often makes the heart grow fonder. Having not released a new record in six years Gorgoroth were decidedly out of the loop. Though time apart can often give you perspective, see what was wrong in the situation. Returning this year with their eight track album Instinctus Bestialis Gorgoroth have indeed gained perspective.

The second Instinctus Bestialis is unleashed from its material bonds and latches itself onto your speakers the lecherous darkness envelopes everything around you. Hitting the ground running the band begin with track “Radix Malorum” featuring some semi classical melodies. Not exactly known for their affiliation with the classical arts the song was very much a surprise. Much can be said for the rest of the album, having had a six year period since the bands last release Quantos, Gorgoroth have had more than enough time to recharge their batteries.

The usual topics are rife, worshipping the dark lord Lucifer and the like, however the malevolent delivery that the band bring to the table is truly astounding. Known for its rigid lack of leniency towards much experimenting it’s a fantastic surprise to hear songs like single “Ad Omnipotens Aeterne Diabolus”. Instead of the all out assault that is expected the band slow the pace down. Creating a fluctuating song structure that gives an incredible amount of emotion breaking away from the typical cold shouldered sense that is employed by Black Metal. Traditionally the band have relied heavily on riffs, which Instinctus has in spades, however the most important ingredient here is originality.

Burn In His Light” exemplifies this, beginning as what you might have heard on a Paradise Lost B-Side then suddenly the crippling realisation that those anvil riffs lurk just around the corner. The song adopts a slight off kilter time signature, moved effortlessly into a beautiful solo, containing arpeggio’s. In a Black Metal song! Particularly the fact that the bands reputation as one of the forerunners of the Black Metal scene makes it all the more applaudable. In one fell swoop the band have reinvented themselves whilst retaining their dogged Black a Metal credentials.

Melody seems to be of paramount importance on the record “Rage” breaks away from the classic blasting to introduce a more dirge like lead line. This break in the structure of the album lends for a fantastic fluidity, ensuring that the blistering speeds don’t get irksome or tiring and the slow sermons serve their purpose. Despite this the album is still however only 32 minutes long! Make no mistake, the songs might be slower but the paroles of our singer are still the embodiment of pure evil. When the band amalgamate all these elements Instinctus Bestialis solemnly drags the listener with the into the halls of Abbadon.

Gorgoroth had a reputation as one of the most fierce Black Metal bands out there. Unfortunately incidents occurred and much of that sense of danger was lost. Going up against fellow black metallers God Seed the band have indeed shown their hand. Returning after their absence they have crafted a daring Black Metal record that is a violent as it is vicarious. If you’re a fan of Black Metal Instinctus Bestialis should be on your Ten Commandments. Black Metal’s frost bitten heart has become a hell of a lot fonder.

[why]Instinctus Bestialis will bring Gorgoroth’s fearsome reputation right back to the top of the Black Metal elite. Returning with an absolutely fierce album the band have made a devastating Lucifer loving statement of intent. [/why]
