Century Media Records are one of the biggest independent record labels out there. With some of the biggest names in metal for over many years it seems that bigger record companies have had their eye on the label. A total of three potential acquisitions from Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and Universal. Rumours abound that Sony has taken the lead in securing the deal, so what does this mean for the company and most importantly its artists?
Well on the one hand, it could be a good thing. Being acquired by a bigger company will mean that there will be a broader reach for the company, a larger budget and all in all more engagement. However this could go one of two ways, either the record company will invest it all in the bands that it has accrued over the years and we could see some major changes, or the label will become more of a vampire squid, more corporate and taking more from the bands and giving less. The arguments for both sides are strong, only time will tell how the company will act. Personally, I think that it might be a fantastic thing that Sony will be able to back the record company and give more of a financial footing, in turn giving the company more lee way. Perhaps they might be able to go out on a limb and sign bands they otherwise would have strayed from, fingers crossed that this is a positive for the record company but most importantly the bands that are already in the Century Media family or are beginning their transition into the record company.
It’s also worth noting that this kind of interest from a major label could signify that Metal is actually doing really well in recent years. Sales in vinyl were up %14 compared to 2013 which is fantastic for us metal heads, perhaps we might finally begin to be accepted, but then in true metal head style we can bitch about how we don’t want to be after all…
