We Discover Our (Ob)Zen In This Week’s Metal Masterpiece

A band as influential as Meshuggah hold some of the most forward thinking albums of recent times. Beginning with the Hetfieldian roars of Contradictions Collapse, with each album the band we’re evolving their sound until they birthed the Meshuggah that we all know.

MESHUGGAH – OBZEN

Known for their fierce musical proficiency Obzen is truly an instrumental gymnasium, from opener “Combustion” with the slight off beat style giving the impression that Kidman‘s vocals are always just at your heels. “Bleed” on the surface seeming a case of unrelenting repeated triplets, on further inspection reveals there is a lot more to it than just repetition. Meshuggah, the musical onion, always striving for more making them not only pioneers of music but discovers of the sonic voyage.

Throughout Obzen were treated to various tempos, from the alien like,  terror inducing bridges in  “Lethargic(a)” to the fury of “Pravus” with elements of progression on final track “Dancers To A Discordant System“. Ever evolving with each different release the band seem to have found their niche with Obzen creating a sound that often imitated but never matched. Tension riddled riffs, off kilter songwriting and complete curveball solos make up the playful pitfalls that Meshuggah put the listener through. Though perhaps not for everyone, Meshuggah are undeniably one of the most creative bands out there and no album showcases their sound more than Obzen. An absolute must have.
