Napalm Death’s Mark “Barney” Greenway Writes Letter To Indonesian President

Joko Widodo

Always being the good Samaritan that the is Greenway has taken it upon myself to personally write to the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo. Although it is known that Widodo is a fan of Napalm Death, this is not the reason for his correspondence.

Previously two Australian men, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have been caught smuggling heroin and as such have now been sentenced to death. Surely as most of you know, Greenway‘s lyrics address matters such as these. Inflicting capital punishment upon these men is wrong. Not absolving the perpetrators of their crimes completely Greenway states that they should answer for their crimes, just without the loss of their lives.

Irregardless of the musical taste of the Indonesian president, Greenway is standing up for what he believes in. Imploring the ruler that he rethink this decision and save the lives of those two men. Never one to shy away from the truth, Napalm Death and specifically Greenway himself paints an ugly, honest picture of some of the aspects of our modern culture.

Read the letter below, do you agree with the points that Greenway raises?

Dear Mr. Widodo,

“I am appealing directly to you to please spare the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the two Australian citizens who are currently awaiting the death sentence in Indonesia for heroin smuggling. As a follower of our band Napalm Death, you would appreciate that our lyrics and ethos challenge the unbroken cycle of violence in the world, whether it comes from a state or as an individual. If these things are not challenged and ultimately changed, I believe we will never truly move forward as humankind.

“I understand that you are standing as a leader determined to change things for the better, and so I believe granting clemency would be a major step forward in this pursuit of betterment. I appreciate that heroin can be damaging on many levels, but I believe that this is a much deeper issue that cannot be changed or altered by simply taking away the lives of people.

“Again, I respectfully ask that you make a real difference and overturn these sentences.

“In hope and peace

“Mark ‘Barney’ Greenway (Napalm Death)”
