The new “Bat Frog” has been found in the Amazon. The frog itself is a completely new discovery, emitting a piercing shrill call similar to that of a bat. Pedro Peloso a postdoctoral researcher heard the frog and instantly realised it was a new species. As part of a biodiversity survey in 2009 of Floresta Nacional de Pau-Rosa which is now a protected area of the Amazon. A total of 21 specimens were found of the brown and orange amphibian.
But most importantly the male frog has an unusually large vocal sack causing it to emit high pitched squeals similar to that of a bat, why is this important to us metal heads? After the team brought back their findings they began talking about Ozzy Osbourne’s infamous bat episode where he bit the head off the bat a fan threw on stage at a gig in 1981.
The frog is named Dendropsophus ozzyi. Always good to know that those on the forefront of the biological world have good taste in music. That’s pretty metal.
