Cephalic Carnage – Misled By Certainty
Throughout 2010 we had some fantastic albums unleashed upon the world The Dillinger Escape Plan bounced back with Option Paralysis, Periphery released their phenomenal self titled début and Avenged Sevenfold decided to carry on with Nightmare. However there was one album that went under everyone’s radar, even the band itself haven’t exactly gone far beyond playing a sold out Underworld.
Misled By Certainty is not only a criminally underrated album but is one of very forward thinking, Cephalic Carnage always begun as a grindcore band but since 2002’s Lucid Interval the band have been injecting a more progressive sound in their off kilter style of deathgrind. Masters of the macabre the band released one of the most controversial videos for single “Ohrwurm” featuring some truly disconcerting bass lines as the focal point of the songs. Being able to create melting riffs as the song progresses in “Abraxas Of Filth” and bring some serious groove on the cheerily titled “Raped By An Orb” will get you to really bang your head, but fret not fans of traditional grind as there are thirty second blasts of brutality in “Pure Horses” along with “P.G.A.D.“. Whilst for those seeking something more involving the albums epic penultimate track “Repangea” a twelve minute movement encapsulating exactly what Cephalic Carnage are about, opening with the sullen saxophone and morose clean guitar the song builds with an eerie sense of melody that wouldn’t go amiss in a Tool album, all the while being seasoned with Cephalic Carnage’s quintessential sound.
If forward thinking, extreme music is your thing then look no further than Misled By Certainty. A perfect example that just because a band has been pigeon-holed into certain styles their creativity knows no bounds, taking the best elements from all extreme genres to create something unique, prepare for a unpredictable bumpy ride!
