We all know the struggles of income when it comes to making music, and the younger generations of metal musicians are increasingly aware the music itself cannot make that much money. Older musicans however can’t get over it, and are very vocal about their discontent with the evolved music distribution…
Enter Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney. He is the latest musician to give complaints about streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora:
“You have these Spotifys and Pandoras where you get access to almost every piece of recorded music on the planet. And then that’s great for the consumer. But for every person who’s ever recorded music, it’s a fucking ripoff. Because, I think, I hear people are starting to post their [royalty] checks [online for having their music streamed]. You get 10 million plays of your song, and you get a check for 111 dollars.”
Unfortunately these days there is no perfect world where the consumer and musician can both be happy, and bands are having to tour more to pay their bills. While Kinney has a very valid point, there is no point in moaning about it as these services are here to stay. We hope one day to see the development of a service where musicians are paid their fair wages without having to put their lives on the line.
