This week they might be a very established band but are often overlooked. Textures create progressively driven tunes which have an incredibly distinctive sound, often lumped in with the dirty word that is Djent, Textures are much more than just another Djent band. With their latest release being Dualism we’re treated to some of their best written songs, although not as heavy as their previous output Silhouettes the musicianship that is shown on this album is second to none. Hailing from the Netherlands the Dutch boys know exactly what to do, in terms of complexity of the music and how to make the songs eerily melodic, Daniel De Jongh‘s haunting vocal lines that give you the impression of a captain going down with his ship work excellently with the well placed lead lines to create a feeling of fragility throughout. Textures‘ endgame though it seems to be to draw the listener in slowly, balancing the more aggressive sounds against the trance inducing lead lines to create the perfect harmony of aggression and peace Having listened to their material it took myself a long time to get accustomed to the off beat drum patters that wouldn’t sound too out of place in Meshuggah’s arsenal.
Have a listen below and see what you think for yourself with one my favourite songs that shows exactly what Textures do best. In “Reaching Home” Textures slowly build to the final crescendo, we hear much of the same riff but its about the addition of simple things, like a crash cymbal or playing a power chord than single notes that Textures seem to thrive on to create their build up. Listen here and hopefully you will agree!
