After the departure of both Hannes Grossmann and Christian Muenzner, although they may not be in Obscura anymore the two are in new project Alkaloid. Besides Grossman and Muenzner Danny Tunker of Aborted fame as well as will be drafted in on guitar as well as Linus Klausenitzer on bass guitar and finally completing the line up is vocalist Florian Magnus Maier, who previously worked with Devin Townsend and the lesser known but just as influencial Noneuclid.
Grossmann states that “As sad as things have turned out with Obcura, I’m really happy that the songs Christian Muenzner and I had initially written for their next record will find a new home in Alkaloid. However, I don’t see Alkaloid as a ‘tech-death’ band, because we just aren’t. The music is definitely prog, but in terms of dynamics, song structures, harmonics and rhythms, it’s just too diverse to be put into a small sub-genre.”
So although they won’t be playing Tech-Death we should definitely keep an ear out for them, with many progressive elements already in their music the tech-death having just been a way to expel this it will be interesting to see how Progressive they go, although we wouldn’t imagine that they would go full on King Crimson…
Alkaloid have just begun recording their new album in the studio and expect for an early 2015 release.
Whilst waiting though how about you whet your appetite with a song from Hannes Grossmann’s new solo album the excellent “The Radial Covenant”
